With over 1.2 billion people, India is the second most populous country in the world (after China). It is composed of 29 states that elect their own governments, and seven union territories ruled by a central government (Figs 22.1–22.3). It is bordered by a number of countries including Pakistan, Bhutan, Nepal, Myanmar (Burma) and Bangladesh, and has an extensive coastline.
