22 A Continental/Subcontinental Region – India Mining and energy
India has the third-largest coal reserves in the world (Fig. 22.19). Coal is used for domestic consumption and in coal-fired power stations. Orissa in the east of the country is a major coal-mining area.
Iron ore, once a major raw material produced in India, has declined in importance due to falling global prices and government concerns about illegal mining and environmental damage. One of the largest copper mines in India is at Khetri in Rajasthan.
Suitable sites along rivers flowing from the Himalayas and the Deccan Plateau give enormous potential for hydroelectric power; dual-purpose dams constructed for irrigation projects currently supply a significant proportion of the area’s renewable energy.
Nuclear energy is the fourth most important energy source in India. However, opposition to the construction of new installations is increasing.
