Local government in France is based on three levels: regional, intermediate and local (Fig. 17.7).
A reform of French local government on 1 January 2016 reduced the number of administrative units at all levels.

Regional level: régions. Included in the 18 régions of France are the island of Corsica and five overseas territories. (Fig. 17.8). The administration of the régions consists of a regional council elected for six years and headed by a president. They receive funding from central government and can levy their own local taxes.
