Interpreting Aerial Photographs
Colour and shading It is possible to identify a number of features by interpreting colour and shading.
1. Direction: As most aerial photographs are taken at noon, shadows typically point to the north.
2. Weather conditions: a. Water may appear white and sunlit if the day is calm.
b. On darker days, water may appear black, as the light isn’t being reflected.
3. Rivers are usually dark blue or grey in colour. 4. Roads are usually grey in colour. 5. Railway lines are usually black in colour. 6. Woodland is usually dark green in colour.
7. Agriculture: a. Permanent grassland is green, which indicates pastoral farming.
b. Fields that appear either yellow or brown in colour most likely indicate arable farming.
c. Fields that are brown in colour have probably been recently ploughed. 200 Car park
