Regular-shaped area The following method should be used to calculate the area of a regular area (Fig. 12.8).
1. Number each full grid square across the base of the area being measured. 2. Number each full grid square along the side of the area being measured. 3. Multiply the number of squares across the bottom by the number of squares along the side. This will give you the area in square kilometres, as each square is 1 square kilometre. Example (Fig. 12.8): 6 grid squares × 4 grid squares = 24 grid squares = 24 km2
