2017, Higher Level, Q12C
Sample Answer: River Sullane
The town of Macroom in County Cork is located between two meanders in the valley of the River Sullane (W 340 734). The river would have been an important source of fresh water and food in the early days of the settlement.
River flooding had an impact on the development of the town and settlement avoided wet point sites (W 325 725, W 345 733).
The bridging point of the river (W 338 729) was a major factor in the development of Macroom. Roads and routes from the surrounding hinterland became focused on this crossing point and contributed to it becoming a market centre for the area.
Relief
Macroom developed on sloping land north and south of the River Sullane. The southerly aspect of the northern slope, which catches more sunlight than the southern slope, is a possible reason why there is greater development on this side. The gentler slopes associated with the northern side also favoured greater settlement here. The very steep slopes at W 337 725 on the southern side have been avoided.
The elevated land on both sides of the valley (W 327 735; 111 metres OD) gave suitable dry point sites, avoiding risk of flooding.
