Incorporating the provinces of Abruzzo, Basilicata, Calabria, Campania, Molise, Puglia and the islands of Sicily and Sardinia, the Mezzogiorno comprises almost 40% of the land area of Italy and contains one-third of the total Italian population of 60.8 million (Figs 21.1–21.3). It is an example of a peripheral region.
