18 A Core Irish Region – The Greater Dublin Area Challenges facing manufacturing in the region
At present, just under half of Irish industry exports go to Britain. Since the UK decided to leave the EU, there are growing fears for the value of Irish goods on the British market as: zz
the value of sterling has fallen significantly against the euro;
zz zz
a return to a hard border would likely see a re-introduction of export tariffs;
greater bureaucratic restrictions would increase delivery times and transport costs.
Ireland’s low corporation tax rate of 12.5% has become an issue for some member states of the European Union, who see it as giving unfair advantage to Ireland in terms of competition. Growing opposition and proposals to examine the harmonisation of tax rates throughout the EU could cause major problems for the GDA’s future growth and development.
