The Western Region is part of the Northern and Western Regional Assembly, one of three regional assemblies in Ireland. Classified as a peripheral region, it consists of the counties of Galway, Mayo and Roscommon (Figs 19.1–19.2). While this region accounts for 20% of the Republic of Ireland’s land area, it is home to just 10% of the population.
