ANTI-AGEING 73
SOD2 expression under oxidative stress in a dose-dependent manner (Figure 3), improving mitochondrial function and reducing oxidative damage. HMOX1 plays a critical role by degrading pro-
oxidant heme into biliverdin, carbon monoxide, and free iron, which help protect cells from further oxidative damage. Diascorbyl azelate has been shown to increase HMOX1 expression by up to 145% significantly, enhancing the cell’s capacity to handle oxidative stress (Figure 4). Diascorbyl azelate supports mitochondrial
resilience, ensures efficient energy production, and reduces oxidative stress. A healthy mitochondrial network is essential for cell survival and renewal, making diascorbyl azelate vital for delaying cellular senescence and keeping skin youthful.
3. Reducing ROS and inhibiting inflammation Beyond direct free radical scavenging and mitochondrial protection, diascorbyl azelate also demonstrates the ability to effectively inhibit ROS generation under UV exposure. By reducing ROS, diascorbyl azelate prevents oxidative damage to the skin’s collagen fibres, preserves the skin barrier, and prevents inflammation—a key factor in accelerating oxy-ageing. The anti-inflammatory effects of diascorbyl
azelate are particularly important because chronic inflammation leads to a vicious cycle of increased oxidative stress, which exacerbates skin ageing. The ability of diascorbyl azelate to break this cycle ensures prolonged protection and healthier, more resilient skin.
4. Collagen synthesis: revitalizing skin’s firm foundation Collagen is the structural protein that provides strength, elasticity, and firmness to the skin. However, as skin ages and oxidative stress
