TP: As the CEO of a cosmetic ingredients manufacturer, is there anything that worries you? Something that poses a threat to the industry. Perhaps regulation or misinformation. Big picture stuff. JCE: I think the industry is strong. It’s a very technological industry, very creative. Every year, we see new companies emerge with something bold. One problem I see is the
commoditisation of active ingredients. We do not make functional ingredients; we are focused only on active ingredients. But price pressure on active ingredients is getting higher and higher, like with functional ingredients, with commodity ingredients. For the industry to continue to
develop new active ingredients, we need a certain margin. The level of investment to maintain this grade of innovation is really very high. And it’s not just the pressure on
price. There is also pressure on the efficacy of products, the reduction of the concentration in the finished goods.
When I came to this business
almost 20 years ago, it was usual for a finished product to have 5-6% active ingredients in the final formula. Today, people ask for 2% and then 1%. And when you are able to demonstrate the efficacy of the active ingredient at 1%, they ask why not 0.5%? It means the pie gets smaller and
the competition gets harder. But, at the same time, from a technological point of view, things are become very interesting. With all the new technologies,
the omics, the genomics, the business is moving from chemistry to biotechnology. I believe in the next few years,
we will see a very strong change in this area. Biotechnology is developing very fast and we have many more tools that give us the opportunity to be much more creative, and to develop a more sustainable business.
