benchmark has a minimal effect on chemical penetration, on par with that of water. The base formulation with 5% second
skin film former showed a 58% chemical penetration, significantly lower than the other test products. Only the second skin film former showed appreciable decrease in penetration of the model pollutant to support decrease in the penetration of harmful substances into the skin.
Ease of removability of pollutant particles The removability of surface pollutants was evaluated by the amount of charcoal remaining on pre-treated and untreated skin after rinse-off with room temperature or warm water (Figure 3). Skin treated with the formulation containing the second skin film former showed comparable performance to that of a conventional emulsion under room temperature water. Both products showed significantly improved performance over untreated skin. Under warm water, skin treated with a
formulation containing the second skin film former showed complete rinse-off of surface pollutants, whereas the conventional emulsion showed 60% pollutant removal. In contrast, untreated skin offers little improvement in pollutant removability at under 20% removal. The second skin film former enables the full
rinse-off of surface pollutants with mild warm water cleansing to facilitate easy pollutant removal.

Discussion With the number of studies demonstrating the potentially negative effects of air pollution on skin, such as ageing effects,2
consumers are
increasingly aware that effective protection against pollution is essential to skin health. Pandemic life has also put a spotlight on the need to protect our bodies from potentially harmful external aggressors such as pollution.
This has caused the market to react with new products that can meet these protection demands among other, important healthy skin needs. Inspired by the natural barrier of human
skin, BASF has developed the second skin film former composed of lipid particles that form a biodegradable and breathable protective barrier. The lipid particles have a unique
