Figure 7: Effect of Portulaca Vita on scalp hydration (A) and illustrative pictures of scalp conditions after treatment application (B) Furthermore, the Portulaca olearacea
was carried out on a panel of 44 female and male test subjects (distributed into two independent groups), between 19 and 67 years old, with dryness, flaking and itchiness on the scalp. For four weeks, every other day, the volunteers applied a leave-on lotion containing 0.5% Portulaca olearacea extract or a placebo lotion. Measurements of scalp hydration
(Corneometer CM 825), itchiness (VAS scale) and scalp desquamation (Dandruff Mean Score IDMS method) were carried out at baseline, after seven days (D7) and 28 days (D28) treatment by an expert clinician. Microscopic analysis of the scalp was taken by means of Trichoscan HD (DermoScan) to evaluate the scalp conditions compared to the placebo group. The significance was calculated according
to a p-value of bilateral Student's t-test in pairs, in the case of normality of the distribution or the Wilcoxon test in the adverse case. The variations are judged statistically significant if p<0.05.
Conclusions In vitro and in vivo testing have demonstrated that the Portulaca olearacea extract possesses soothing efficacy which improves skin and scalp conditions. Thanks to its multiple actions, the Portulaca olearacea extract has proven significant effects on the regulation of several genes and parameters involved in epidermal water homeostasis, immune response, and skin barrier repair. Two independent clinical tests proved that the action can be a protective and beneficial ingredient for subjects experiencing skin irritancy. The soothing effect on the face was visible as a reduction in redness (erythema), inflammation, and itching sensation. On the scalp, the Portulaca olearacea extract has proven efficacy in reinforcing the epidermal barrier function, attenuating the perception of itch, and reducing flake appearance.

extract is 100% of natural and organic origin, which makes it a suitable ingredient in products which enter the green, sustainable, and eco-friendly category. An effective ingredient is designed for skin and scalp care preparations to strengthen stratum corneum integrity, recovery, and protection, even for the most fragile skins.
