Te Minister for Production, Rocío Ingred Barrios Alvarado, stated that the tourism sector in Peru is currently in “intensive care”
PERU GOVERNMENT Peru's casinos won't reopen until August
Peruvian President Martín Vizcarra passed a controversial measure to control the pandemic, quarantining men and women on different days of the week
According to President of the National Chamber of Tourism Carlos Canales Anchorena, casinos will not reopen until August. While the government plans a gradual reopening of the tourism sector, casinos will be the last sector to open to the public the Minister claimed. Casinos will be opened as part of the “Tourism for All” programme which will launch in July.
In an interview with magazine Caretas the minister admitted that the tourism sector was currently “in intensive care.” While large scale inbound tourism will be closed this year apart from possibly business travel he said he was optimistic that domestic tourism will see an upsurge later this year.
“Te Minister of Production (Rocío Ingred Barrios Alvarado) has indicated that some measures will be taken in phases one, two and three. Our sector is in phase three. Tus, we will rejoin on June 15, when the health emergency ends.”
Brazil Online operators in Brazil turn to reality TV
With no football or major sports competitions taking place because of the spread of COVID-19 online gambling operators present in the Brazilian market are looking at new betting options in order to attract new customers and keep already existing customers engaged.
Sportingbet, Bodog, BetWarrior, MarjoSports and
Sportsbet.io have been offering bets on the outcome of the latest season of the Brazilian version of Big Brother which recently recorded a 1.5 billion vote milestone and is on free-to-air Globo TV.
Sports betting sites have become an important source of revenue for football clubs since 2018, when Law 13.756/18 legalised sports betting activity nationwide. Law 13756/2018 will allow for both online and land based sports betting as well but the bill is yet to be passed. However sports betting companies have been present in the media via sponsorship deals with local football clubs. In the 2019 Brazilian Championship, 13 of the
20 Serie A teams were sponsored by offshore betting companies. Sponsor of Corinthians and Goiás, MarjoSports recently announced the suspension of its contract with the clubs during the crisis. Football in the country has been suspended until further notice.
According to the Brazilian Legal Game Institute (IJL) betting on Big Brother is just one of the non sporting related bets now being offered by operators in the Brazilian market. Speaking on a live video on Instagram Magnho José, president of the IJL said that operators are also offering bets on when football legend Ronaldinho will be released from jail. Ronaldinho and his brother were held in Paraguay in March on suspicion of entering the country with a false passport.
“In my opinion, it is time for the Government to legalise games in the country to strengthen the economy, in addition to formalising and generating jobs, fighting informality, illegal gambling and money laundering,” said Magnho.
Gaming comes under the jurisdiction of the Foreign Trade and Tourism Ministry (MINCETUR). Anchorena said that social distancing measures will be lifted in three phases. Te tourism sector is included in phase three, which begins from June 15, when the health emergency is expected to end. Casinos and slot parlours come under the last stage of the revival program, and only in August will casinos be able to open.
“Te casino and slot machine sector is the most supervised sector of all tourist activities, generating 10,000 jobs. Tat sector is, according to the Minister of Production, in the last stage and in August it will be reinstated,” he said.
Peru has begun enforcing strict new measures to stop the spread of the coronavirus disease. Peruvian President Martín Vizcarra passed a controversial measure to control the pandemic on April 2nd, quarantining men and women on different days of the week.
