One of the things I’ve been really impressed with during the industry-wide lockdown, has been the purporseful response from the sector’s trade associations. Fund raising, support and lobbying have all featured prominently in campaigns organised across the globe by gaming industry trade bodies in response to the pandemic and its affects on business and employees. The work of the Betting and Gaming Council, with its ‘10 pledges for Covid-19,’ is a highlight from the UK, but there are multiple examples across the international gaming industry of trade bodies and associations that have sought to protect business and the communities they serve and should be recognised for their efforts.


In this issue we highlight the work that the American Gaming Association has been championing in the US as it takes the government to task over its lack of support of gaming businesses during the lockdown of the industry in the States. AGA President, Bill Miller, is also working with the Association of Gaming Equipment Manufacturers (AGEM), to fight the continued operation of illegal gaming machines across multiple states in the US. At a time when a spectrum of voices are calling for clemancy for these devices, just as legal, legitimate operators are enduring lockdown and uncertainty over their own businesses, the fact that AGEM and AGA are apinting a target on these illegal operations is to be applauded.


THE AMERICAN GAMING ASSOCIATION HAS TAKEN TO TASK THE US GOVERNMENT FOR ITS LACK OF REAL SUPPORT FOR THE INDUSTRY


The need for a strong, competent unified voice that represents the views of tens of thousands of individual companies and employees is more important than ever at this time. G3 reached out to Marcus Prater, Executive Director at AGEM for a message, and he responded with the following: “The Association of Gaming Equipment Manufacturers (AGEM) sends a message of hope to everyone in the global gaming industry during these difficult times. For our members – gaming suppliers dealing with an unprecedented worldwide casino shutdown – we’ve suspended the collection of all membership dues as a goodwill gesture to assist amid this painful economic environment. At the same time, AGEM intends to remain a resource and voice for our industry overall and the suppliers in particular.


“AGEM has provided regular informational updates to the membership after gathering input during meetings with a wide range of stakeholders, starting with the AGEM Officers and including the American Gaming Association, the National Association of Manufacturers, the Nevada Resort Association, regulators and fellow trade associations. To all of our members around the world and everyone involved in the global gaming industry, we thank you for your support of AGEM over the years and hold hope for a strong recovery for your companies and employees.”
