Enhanced Manufacturing Services 4.0: Philosophy and DfT 4.0

ndustry 4.0 is the widely-used name for the current trend of automation and data exchange in manufacturing. The concept is
being applied by many in order to create the smart factory. Within the modular elements of smart factories, cyber-physical systems monitor physical processes, create a virtual copy of the physical world, and make decentralized deci- sions. Key principles of Industry 4.0 include:

and people all communicate with each other. l

Despite all the fanfare for
Industry 4.0, the truth is that many electronics companies still have only a partial understanding of what it is and how it applies. While it may appear complicated from the outside, Industry 4.0 is merely the logical extension of the increasing automa- tion and connectivity that has been a part of continuous process improve- ment for decades. In some ways, much of the infor-
mation already exists within a typi- cal design-to-delivery flow. But these are isolated stages that do not com- municate with each other. Breaking down the walls between departments is critical.
New Design-to-Delivery Flow In order to help manufacturers
deliver more defect-free products, Aster developed a new vision of design-to-delivery flows, by applying the principles of Industry 4.0. Enhanced Manufacturing Services (EMS) 4.0 can be used as part of a company’s continuous improvement program to decrease product develop- ment time, production cost and man- ufacturing cycle time, while increas- ing quality, reliability and customer satisfaction. EMS 4.0 is built on two princi-
ples. First, it is able to qualify the customer’s defect data using trace- ability and repair loops (big data analysis). These data include not only manufacturing defects, but also design and functional defects. Second, it allows the simulation
of the manufacturing flow from schematic or layout files. This is in order to identify the possible conse- quences of inadequate testability and test coverage on a new design. Traditionally, manufacturing
and test constraints have only been considered at the end of the layout phase, just prior to the transfer of CAD data to production. This is too late to have a significant effect on time-to-market. With EMS 4.0, TestWay signifi-

delivery, which is a critical success factor. It makes it possible to implement a lean test approach that creates a lower-cost product, while maintaining high quality. The following stages are addressed:
