Six Things to Know about the Future of Robots

Continued from page 27

solution is being applied in manufac- turing, with robots being taught by humans. The robots can take over once they have achieved the level of competence needed to become com- pletely autonomous.

Robots Can Be Vehicles and Vice Versa. Drones, autonomous ground vehicles (AGVs), both on the road and in the warehouse, all need to col- laborate with people and with the en- vironment, according to Justin Ha, senior supply chain solution design manager at DHL. DHL holds an an- nual innovation challenge every year. The last two years have focused on robotics, particularly robots that deliver goods directly to consumers. The simple movement of goods

could be a major role for robotics in the future. In the manufacturing en- vironment, material seamlessly sup- plied to the right place at the right time adds a lot of value. It is shocking to see how much line downtime re- sults from missing materials and how long it can take to find them. Amazon is a leader in supply

chain and the movement of goods. It is no secret that Amazon has heavily invested in robotics and AI to operate its warehouses. The use of AGVs is a big part of that strategy. According to Ha, DHL sees robotics as a solu- tion to real labor shortages in certain geographies and ongoing capacity growth in other regions.

Robots Do Jobs We Can’t or

Won’t Do. Terry Fong, the director of the Intelligence Robotics Group (IRG) at NASA Ames Research Cen- ter says, “NASA wants robots to go where people can’t, extending human reach way beyond what we can do today. It’s hard to keep people alive in space, so robots are an ideal solu- tion to support people who work there.” Robots can be in places that we cannot, can carry things that we cannot, and they operate at much higher speeds than we can. These “jobs we can’t do” are all

primary tasks for robotics. Jobs we do not want to do are next. After that, economics will be the deciding factor, with robots doing the jobs that by automating, provide the most sav- ings and value. Robots, cobots and AGVs will be

doing a lot for us in the future. Some of that will augment existing jobs, and some will clearly displace hu- mans. This will have a social impact that needs to be considered. Movies, such as Terminator,

make robots seem scary. In reality, robots are only tools and as such do not challenge humanity. However, when they are combined with AI it is a whole other story. AI can develop in ways we can-

not currently imagine, and to become something potentially more intelli- gent and powerful than us. This is what keeps people like Elon Musk awake at night and what we need to consider at a corporate and federal level. r

Suffering from any of these Solder Paste Problems?

Voids Flux Residue Slumping Printing problems Short stencil life

Eliminating these problems starts with the flux. Higher quality flux means better solder joints, and high quality flux starts with powder.
