PI Creates Miniature X/Y Stage for Precision Positioning

Auburn, MA — PI (Physik Instru mente) has developed a new, ultra-compact x/y scanner and positioner, U-723. The positioning stage is powered by small, integrated direct-drive ul- trasonic piezoceramic motors. A single-axis version is also available. The patented drive provides smooth

motion with high resolution and its self-lock- ing motor offers a significant advantage over magnetic drive technologies. Once the motor reaches a target position, it acts like a ce- ramic brake and locks the platform into place, providing extreme long-term stability at zero driving current and heat generation. U-723 joins the company’s existing

portfolio of compact linear stages. It provides more than 0.8 in. (20.3 mm) travel per axis, with a footprint of only 1.6 x 1.6 in. (40.6 x 40.6 mm). Its low profile of 0.8 in. (20.3 mm) and minia- turized design enables easy integration into existing systems, especially where space is limited. In addition to speeds of up to 7.9

in./s (20 cm/sec), the low inertia — di- rect drive, no rotating parts — allows dynamic start-stop behavior with set- tling times in the millisecond range. With drive frequencies greater than 100 kHz, the motors cannot be detect- ed by the human ear. Dis placement is generated in continuous sub-nanomet- ric increments, leading to extremely smooth motion with a wide dynamic range from 0.04 mil/s (1 µm/s) to 7.9 in./s (20 cm/s). Optical linear encoders provide

VPC Intros High-Speed EMI Connector

Waynesboro, VA — Virginia Panel Corporation (VPC) has introduced its new i2 MX rugged, EMI-shielded con - nector, which builds on the success of the company’s popular i2 Micro iCon, a configurable connector in the same 0.8 in. (2 cm) footprint. Combined with its slimmer, metal engagement knob and an oblong cable exit, the i2 MX provides maximum cable clearance and can be stacked easily.

position feedback with 10 nm resolution. Higher resolution stages are also available. Due to the low power requirement of the ul- trasonic motor, the U-723 can be integrated into mobile measuring and medical devices. The company also offers vacuum compati-

ble versions. Contact: PI (Physik Instrumente) L.P.,

movable, all-metal backshell to pro- vide ample access for troubleshooting and maintenance. The backshell and cable exit are designed with EMI- shielding to minimize interference and protect signal integrity. The i2 MX al- lows for multiple modular inserts, in- cluding micro- and mini-power and coax, QuadraPaddle™, TriPaddle and VTAC (HSD). VPC has engineered the
