A short while after departing Rosyth, head out on deck to capture a glimpse of two geological wonders that guard the coastline of the Orkney archipelago. At 230 feet and 450 feet respectively, The Needle and the Old Man of Hoy are incredible sea stacks that have been a magnet for tourists and climbers alike over the years. Sailing past these dramatic structures in the morning may even afford you the chance to see a climber or two starting an ascent.
Later on you’ll arrive at Kirkwall, capital of the Orkney Islands, for an overnight stay. Among the many delights to experience here are the 5,000-year-old Neolithic village of Skara Brae, a site older than the Egyptian Pyramids; the ceremonial stone circles of Stenness and Brodgar; and the dominating spectacle of St Magnus, Britain’s most northerly cathedral.
Lerwick completes your journey of discovery. It’s a great base for uncovering the stunning sites of Shetland, though the town’s quaint shops and charming harbour make for tempting propositions too. The fascinating Bronze Age settlement of Clickimin Broch; coastal Northmavine; and RSPB Sumburgh Head, home to curious puffins, are particularly recommended.
