The pretty capital, Lisbon, makes for the perfect recipe for exploration. Fascinating museums engage and enthral, while vintage trams weave through quaint backstreets, and architectural sights evoking a rich maritime history still stand proud. On the subject of recipes, be sure to try a famous pastry at Pasteis de Belém – the secret formula for the creation of these sweet treats has remained unchanged since the 19th
century.
An overnight stay allows time to really make the most of the region. Enjoy authentic culture with a performance of Fado music or venture further afield to pretty Óbidos or Sintra. After the rewarding city exploration comes the chance to relax amid the outdoor cafés, beautiful waterfront panoramas and pretty townscapes of Portimão, perched on the Algarve coast.
Black Watch will call into Leixões to round off this itinerary. Here you’ll be well-placed for tours to Oporto, a city renowned for its historic centre, which is rightly designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Within the centre is the Ribeira District, where narrow lanes meander down to the Douro River. Opt for a cruise along the tranquil waters perhaps before stopping at a wine cellar to savour the locally produced Port wine.
