Before visiting five gorgeous islands in the Mediterranean you’ll begin your springtime exploration of this sun-kissed region with calls at two charming cities on the Spanish mainland. Both Malaga and Cartagena are gateways to a wealth of historical and artistic treasures, from the Picasso Museum and Alhambra Palace to impressive Roman architecture.
A full day on Ibiza affords time to experience the iconic sunset and discover that there’s much more to the island than its vibrant nightlife. Highlights include the UNESCO-listed Old Town of Dalt Vila; picture- perfect Formentera is within reach too. Menorcan delights follow shortly after, during your call into Mahon. Perhaps you’ll simply enjoy the sunshine on your pick of Menorca’s inviting beaches, or opt for an adventure and go in search of incredible views from atop Monte Toro – the island’s highest peak.
The French island of Corsica, a natural wonderland of breathtaking coastlines, lush forests, towering mountains and winding rivers, never fails to impress. Balmoral will dock at Ajaccio, the birthplace of Napoléon Bonaparte and your gateway to the
dramatic Prunelli Gorges. The area’s granite cliffs plunge into the Prunelli River creating postcard- perfect scenes. You’ll find the sophisticated Italian island of Sardinia has much to recommend it too. You could stay in Olbia and capture the city’s authentic Sardinian style, though the chance to tour to the luxury Costa Smeralda resort, popular with the ‘jet-set’, is sure to tempt.
Returning to Spanish shores, Mallorca ends your island-hopping adventure with typical Mediterranean style. Palma’s maze of sun-bathed streets and squares are yours to explore, with impressive sights – such as the Gaudi-crafted Gothic cathedral – to discover at every turn. Alternatively, you could head off on a journey aboard the vintage train to Soller, before exploring the traditional village of Valldemossa.
As you head back to the UK, Cádiz and Lisbon await. The various tapas bars and fascinating ancient centre of Cádiz, and the selection of highlights in Lisbon, including maritime architectural treasures and authentic Fado music, make for two rewarding final stops on this unforgettable cruise.
