Exploration | Arctic, Iceland, Greenland & Norway
Newcastle’s convenient location means you can escape quickly into Norway’s effortlessly beautiful winter landscape on this action-packed Arctic adventure. In less than two weeks aboard Balmoral you can experience a land of polar parks, authentic husky sledding, intriguing architecture and more, with a chance to capture the awe-inspiring spectacle of the Northern Lights too. The flawless beauty of Norway’s North Cape will dazzle you in every way.
Northern Lights Tromsø
Dog sledding
After relaxing cruising along the dramatic archipelago of Western Norway, the first port of call, Narvik, presents an initial opportunity to get up close to the stunning scenery of the wintertime Arctic. The area surrounding the port offers fabulous husky sledding, or the thrill of snowmobiling perhaps. On a tour meanwhile is the popular Polar Nature Park, home to a variety of Arctic animals.
The following day signals the start of 48 hours in Alta, and the chance to go in search of the awe- inspiring Aurora Borealis – a simply unmissable and unforgettable experience. Alta is widely regarded as one of the best places on the planet to see the Northern Lights, so if luck is with you during your stay you might see Mother Nature’s exceptional light display. You will also have time to discover the unique Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel, with its 30 bedrooms, ice bar, ice chapel and collection of beautiful sculptures; or you could choose to immerse yourself in the culture of the indigenous Sami people on a visit to the fascinating Alta Museum with its famous interior exhibits, some of which date back five millennia.
Polar Park
The ‘Gateway to the Arctic’, Tromsø, continues this voyage of exploration. The city skyline is dominated by the iconic iceberg shape of the Arctic Cathedral and the tumbling ‘ice floe’ block architecture of the Polaria Aquarium. A scenic cable car ride up to the top of Mount Storsteinen to admire the unspoilt views is not to be missed. For a truly unforgettable experience, a husky-sled ride through the glistening wilderness surrounding the city is wholeheartedly recommended. Your Tromsø adventure will be followed by another evening in search of the magical Northern Lights.
Historic Bodø marks the northernmost point of the staggeringly beautiful Kystriksveien Coastal Route, with quaint surrounding fishing villages to uncover under skies populated by soaring Sea Eagles. There’s a day to explore this remote location which is the northernmost stop on Norway’s railway network. The town centre was rebuilt after being destroyed by World War II bombs, and its charm extends to the stunning backdrop of the nearby Lofoten Islands with their range of rugged crags and peaks.
