Exploration of the breathtaking Azores takes in three of the archipelago’s most beautifully unspoilt and diverse islands. On Terceira Island Black Watch’s day- long stop at Praia da Vitoria gives time to visit the nearby city of Angra do Heroismo. This UNESCO- listed jewel in Terceira’s crown boasts interesting museums, historic palaces and impressive churches, including the 16th
century Sé Cathedral. The
205-metre-high Monte Brasil offers wonderful views of the city and its scenic surroundings.
Hard-to-reach Faial Island is a natural wonderland of volcanic craters, tranquil lakes and emerald green valleys with Horta the starting point for taking it all in. Calling overnight here, you could opt for a tour to the magnificent Capelinhos Volcano. The Capelinhos is Faial’s most famous landmark, which can be seen in all its striking glory on a scenic island drive or exhilarating 4x4 adventure. Horta’s historic city centre and picturesque marina are also well worth exploring.
There are volcanic wonders to uncover on São Miguel Island too. Ponta Delgada is the gateway to the extinct Sete Cidades Volcano – one of the Seven Natural
Wonders of Portugal – where the 13 kilometre-wide crater and colourful lakes create an astonishing scene. Elsewhere there’s Terra Nostra Park, a haven of gorgeous gardens, geo-thermal pools and dense woodlands that are home to stunning endemic flora.
From the Azores Black Watch then heads to Madeira for the very special ‘Four Fred.s in Funchal’ event. After docking alongside Braemar, Balmoral and Boudicca, you’ll be part of a memorable day of celebration shared with crews and fellow guests from all four ocean-going ships that make up the Fred. Olsen fleet. Enjoy fantastic live entertainment, tuck in to delicious, specially prepared menus and even take the chance to visit the other ships during this simply unforgettable event. Away from all the festivities, there are chances to explore Madeira’s botanical gardens and unique levada walking trails too.
Completing this in-depth Portuguese discovery is a call at Leixões for Oporto. Tour to Portugal’s second city for chances to ride a Rabelo Boat along the Douro River, followed by a sampling of famous port wine; or wander the UNESCO-listed historic centre.
