Exploration | Arctic, Iceland, Greenland & Norway
The spectacular Norwegian North Cape has an extra dramatic dimension in winter that makes it one of the most exciting places on Earth. During your two weeks aboard Black Watch, you’ll be able to go in search of the breathtaking Northern Lights, experience Sami National Day in Tromsø, marvel at Alta’s unique igloo hotel, and take an authentic dog sled ride across the dazzling Arctic landscapes. This is an extraordinary exploration not to be missed.

After a couple of days to settle in on board, Ålesund, and its skyline of Art Nouveau towers, turrets, steeples and spires, gets your adventure underway in style. The pedestrianised streets are a delight to explore, as are the art galleries, diverse shops and lively cafés. Meanwhile, the summit of Mount Aksla rewards with panoramic views of this attractive city.
In Trondheim, Norway’s former Viking capital, the brightly-painted houses of Bakklandet and the Gothic-style Nidaros Cathedral are both worth strolling around. The next day’s sailing takes you across the Arctic Circle, en route to the ‘Gateway to the Arctic’, Tromsø, where you’ll have two days to explore. While the town’s impressive Neoclassical architecture and beautiful, iceberg-shaped cathedral are notable highlights, your arrival happily coincides with Sami National Day. The celebrations of this ancient indigenous people are a real treat, with the traditional dress, yoik choirs and more sure to linger long in the memory.
With the festivities complete, the course is set for Alta, and the chance to seek out the awe-inspiring Aurora
Borealis – a simply unmissable and unforgettable experience. During an overnight stay in what’s considered one of the best places on Earth to see the Northern Lights you might be fortunate enough to see Mother Nature’s incredible light display. There’s also time to discover the Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel, with its 30 bedrooms, ice bar, ice chapel and collection of beautiful sculptures.
Alternatively, you can immerse yourself back into Sami culture by visiting the fascinating Alta Museum with its famous interior exhibits, some of which date back five millennia. Or take the chance to meet curious huskies, and explore the surrounding Arctic landscapes on an exhilarating dog-sledding adventure.
Final port of call, Kristiansund, is one of the earliest Norwegian settlements. The elegant natural harbour is home to the intriguing Klippfisk Museum and gateway to the dramatic Atlantic Road – a favourite of advertising agencies for car brands, it’s one of the world’s most photographed highways. Enjoy some time to explore the city, before heading home to conclude this incredible journey.
