An overnight stay in Bordeaux is first, and your exploration of the city – much of which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site – begins at the end of the gangway, courtesy of Braemar’s smaller size. The many landmarks are sure to delight, though no visit would be complete without sampling the famous wine culture at the Cité du Vin museum or on a vineyard tour.
Following the French delights, you’ll have three days to enjoy the northern regions of Spain. Scenic Santander is not only nestled along a picturesque coastline, but also an excellent gateway to the breathtaking Picos Mountains and the ancient Altamira Cave paintings. Docking next to the modernist Óscar Niemeyer Centre in Avilés meanwhile presents an interesting contrast to the fascinating Old Town. From here there’s a chance to sample Asturian Cider at a cider house, too.
Lastly, there are the charms of laid-back La Coruña to unravel, made easier thanks to Braemar conveniently docking centrally. With a compact Old Quarter, an impressive promenade and a sprinkling of landmarks – including the Tower of Hercules – it’s perfect for sightseeing. You’ll also be well placed for tours to the astounding Santiago de Compostela Cathedral.
