The cruise begins with two days of relaxed sailing before arriving at the world’s most northerly capital, Reykjavik, gateway to some of Earth’s most famous natural wonders. You’re sure to be awestruck by the sight of the ‘Big Three’ on the Golden Circle route: the gushing Geysir hot springs, the mighty Gullfoss Waterfall, and the UNESCO-listed Thingvellir National Park. Then there’s the chance to unwind in the Blue Lagoon and bathe in its warm geothermal waters, or enjoy the city’s wealth of quality museums, galleries and delightful cafés.
Next port of call is the splendid natural harbour of Ísafjörður. Visiting the small town centre of preserved timber buildings is an absolute joy. Look out for the Westfjords Heritage Museum, it has fascinating exhibits on the town’s maritime history. The magnificent untouched scenery can best be enjoyed on an exhilarating fjord kayak tour, or you can take a boat trip to see the thousands of birds on Vigur Island – the puffins are a real treat.
The next day’s scenic cruising takes you past Hornstrandir, Iceland’s northernmost peninsula
Ísafjörður
and location of a spectacular nature reserve. Named after ghosts, Drangaskörð is one of Iceland’s most underrated views. The peninsula’s seven rocky peaks that jut out into the sea from the base of the Skarðafjall Mountain would inspire any photographer, as does Eyjafjörður – Iceland’s longest fjord.
The charming town of Akureyri nestles serenely on the fjord, and is the starting point for tours to Godafoss – ‘Waterfall of the Gods’ – and the tranquil bird haven, Lake Mývatn. Alternatively, you can opt for the experience of a lifetime by joining a whale watching tour in search of Humpback and Minke Whales, dolphins and porpoises in their unspoilt, natural habitat.
This majestic journey comes to a close on the sublime waters of Seydisfjörður, a fjord gracefully carved by ice age glaciers, distinguished by its colourful harbour town and intriguing Norwegian heritage. The valley above this picturesque town echoes to the sound of two dozen thundering waterfalls formed by the river Fjarðará cascading down to a lagoon at the head of the fjord.
