Closer and Rivers & Waterways | Europe
From tasting fine wines to marveling at the world’s largest Gothic cathedral, from sampling tapas in the place it was invented to taking a tour of the ‘sherry capital of the world’– there are plenty of opportunities to be exhilarated and inspired on this 13-night adventure. You’ll enjoy exploration of Bordeaux and Seville, Lonely Planet’s top cities to visit in 2017 and 2018 respectively, and it will all be brought closer by Braemar in every destination.
Alcázar Palace, Seville
Docking alongside the modernist Óscar Niemeyer Centre in Avilés presents an interesting contrast to the fascinating architecture of the Old Town nearby. From here there’s the chance to sample traditional Asturian Cider at a cider house. Sailing on to the west coast, the fishing port of Vigo is ripe for exploration, with sandy beaches, a stunning historic quarter and a scenic bay – which you may recognise from the film 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. The city is also perfectly-placed for tours to the Cíes Islands National Park.
An overnight stay in Seville is ideal for tapping into the city’s rich flamenco heritage with a seductive evening performance. Braemar will be docked close to the enchanting Parque de Maria Luisa and iconic Plaza de España, so the best highlights – including the Moorish Alcázar Palace and Gothic Cathedral to name two more – will be within reach, with the ship on hand for when you’re ready for a break.
Cádiz signals the end of the Spanish leg of your adventure, and where better to round off than a city that’s said to be Europe’s oldest continuously
inhabited settlement? The ancient centre showcases a typically Andalusian maze of narrow cobblestone streets, alleys and squares, all perfect for exploration.
Cádiz is also famed for its historic watchtowers and delicious tapas, which – according to popular legend – originated in the city. For an authentic flavour of the region, you could choose to head off on a ‘tapas trail’ walking tour, or take a trip to Jerez, the sherry capital of the world.
There’s beautiful Bordeaux before your journey draws to a close, with an invigorating full day giving time to take in the highlights at leisure. Much of the centre is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it’s all to hand when Braemar docks in the heart of the city. Though many famous landmarks are sure to delight, no visit would be complete without indulging a little in the famous wine culture. Invigorating experiences await at the Cité du Vin museum or on an authentic vineyard tour. Then you can relax – with lasting memories to treasure – as Braemar navigates the Gironde & Garonne rivers en route back to Southampton.
