BESPOKE VESSELS


The vessels are very versatile with moveable wheelhouses which allows a dedicated environmentally controlled repair pod/ workshop to be added to the vessel. This pod is fitted with all the equipment required to implementing efficient repair, maintenance and certification of safety systems and a specially designed workshop unit for


fuel efficient and carbon friendly CTV’s not only reducing costs but also reducing the carbon emissions and carbon footprint of the activities.

COST SAVINGS


Bob Dickens (MD of Safety Technology) said: “Without taking account of the lost revenue for the turbine shut down, we believe that using the combined expertise of all three companies will result in a saving of at least 40% when compared with each inspection and repair task being done separately as at present.” The companies are also talking to other industry specialists with a view to adding further activities to their list of support services to make the proposition even more attractive.


To achieve these savings the Offshore Maintenance and Inspection Alliance (OMIA) uses teams of technicians to work on each area at the same time thus reducing the need to have multiple trips to the turbine and reducing lost revenue from downtime of the turbine.

It is essential to ensure that each trip with the vessel is well planned and the use is optimised. By using the system proposed each technician and activity required will have the support services available on the vessel to enable the work to be carried out both efficiently and to a high quality without having to return to port and then back to the turbine the next day due to lack of components or equipment.


It is planned for each vessel to be able to support sufficient teams of technicians to be able to work on 2 turbines simultaneously. Furthermore the technicians will be transported to site by exceptionally reliable,


from the synergy between the technicians and vessel crews as they are all working as part of the same team and understand fully the objectives and requirements of the tasks and the safety issues involved. There is also a significant reduction in lost time and administration as all aspects of the work are dealt with centrally by Safety Technology for the alliance.


MAJOR STEP FORWARD


This exciting initiative is indeed a big step forward in the drive to reduce costs in the renewables sector and especially for offshore wind, helping to push down the cost of energy generation and the competitiveness of offshore wind in the energy mix.
