COMPETENCE MANAGEMENT SECTION SPONSOR MANAGING SAFELY FOR WIND POWER

ARMSA Consulting have been providing support across the power generation sector since 1996, delivering industry, role, and often tailor made training for those working in this high risk, high consequence sector.

They have taken generic programmes like IOSH (Institution of Occupational Safety and Health) Safety for Senior Executives and Managing Safely and translated them into programmes like ‘Managing Safely for Wind Power’, an IOSH, Energy and Utilities Skills, and Renewable Training Network accredited programme crammed full of examples from

on- and offshore windfarm projects around the UK and the rest of the world.

INDUSTRY KNOWLEDGE The company’s collective 80 years of audits across all power generation technologies has provided them with a wealth of industry knowledge and their unique ‘regenerate’ process has enabled them to capture data from all their activities and delegate feedback to ensure that their programmes stay up to date, operationally focussed and business centred.

INDUSTRY COLLABORATION The company also have relationships with a wide variety of Institutions including the Institute of Environmental Management & Assessment (IEMA)

Commercial Training ‘LIVE’ CONTRACTS

Wind Energy projects are giving rise to a number of contractual issues and in Knowles’ experience the contracting parties benefit greatly from gaining a better practical understanding of the contractual and commercial key issues that need to be properly managed in these projects.

TRAINING CONTENT

The company typically presents two day in- house courses which address...

• Creation of contracts and subcontracts including the status of

letters of intent

• Administration of the contract including instructions and submissions to be made

• Common problems with variations • Payment under the contract • The importance of notification under English law

• Importance of records • How to assess extensions of time • How to prepare delay • Disruption claims and how to manage defects in the work

The company often incorporates contract documentation from a couple of live contracts to bring the training ‘alive’ and give real focus.

RECURRING PROBLEMS

It is also useful to incorporate a series of commonly recurring problems into the seminar as they provide a source of healthy debate on subjects such as…

• ‘Who owns the float’ in programmes? • Can contractors claim for the costs of acceleration?

• Are there any circumstances when delays due to bad weather can lead to a monetary claim?

• If a contractor’s drawings are ‘approved’ or ‘checked’ by an Engineer and an error is later discovered, who bears the cost and does a contractor lose his right to claim an extension of time if he fails to submit a contractual notice?

‘HIGH LEVEL’ EXPLANATIONS It is also interesting to have a ‘high level’ explanation of relevant legal cases such as MT Hojgaard A/S and E.ON Climate

v Renewables UK Robin Rigg East and West Limited (2015) which deals with the International Standard J101 which is a detailed standard for offshore structures.

A two day training course gives delegates the necessary knowledge to recognise a potential risk or opportunity which will reap financial benefits on their current and future projects.

Knowles Limited

and the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) and can deliver a variety of accredited and non-accredited programmes to meet the unique needs of your business and your circumstances.

BESPOKE PROGRAMMES

In the last year they have developed a wealth of bespoke client centred programmes such as Hazard Identification (HAZID) and Hazard and Operability Analysis (HAZOP) for project based personnel; Construction Design and Management for offshore project managers; Contract Management and Operational Safety.

ENERGY EVOLUTION

Over the last 20 years, the growth of nuclear, wind, biomass and other renewables, as well as an increase in smaller scale energy production have dramatically changed the way the sector operates.

ARMSA’s clients have changed from the Big 6, to a variety of organisations across the supply chain from pension funds to tier two suppliers. If the company have learned anything in that time, it is that informed decision making improves business performance which underpins every piece of work they undertake.
