Having many of the same issues in relation to education, training and skills provision as the rest of the country i.e. ageing workforce in the technical sectors, a dearth of construction specialists and poor integration and understanding between education and business. However, about 3 years ago the Borough Council and its partners started along the path to addressing these issues and things have really moved forward at a pace ever since.
SKILLS SUMMIT
It started with a skills summit bringing employers and the education sector together in one room and getting them talking, something which had never happened before.
Since that time the relationship has gone from strength to strength and is now culminating in over £30m of current and proposed activity aimed at revolutionising our education and skills base.
• A new Construction Skills Academy – opened in May 2015 – involving the CITB and 3 education partners, Leeds, Redcar and Yorkshire Coast Colleges
• The newly established 54 North Maritime Training School providing crew certification for the offshore industry
• Engineering Week – involving over 40 companies providing career inspiration to over 2,000 children each year
• Establishment of the employability charter and the passport to work programme for the Borough's school children
• Delivery of the Forewind Champions for Wind programme in the schools across our region.
• The creation of Yorkshire’s Offshore Energy Operation and Maintenance Centre in Whitby 2016, by Dalby Offshore Services and incorporating offshore training partners
INVESTING IN THE FUTURE Cllr Derek Bastiman, Leader of Scarborough Borough Council commented: “An immense amount of time and effort has been invested in the future skills vision for the Borough from our business ambassadors, local authorities, training and education sectors and importantly our employees, students and learners in shaping our vision, raising aspiration and delivering a whole new culture of excellence in learning and skills.
“I’m left in no doubt that with the impetus we have developed and the partnerships we have in place we can fulfil our vision of being the most highly skilled coastal towns in England well before 2030.”
