NEXANS POWER ACCESSORIES (UK) LTD A SUPPLY CHAIN POWERHOUSE

They say all good things come in threes – suggesting that things (or people in this case) are inherently more professional, inspiring and effective than any other number.

None more so than with my three next guests from Nexans Power Accessories in Castleford, Yorkshire who visited our offices recently and are also our sponsors for this issue’s Technical Section for Training and Development.

INTRODUCTIONS

I introduce to you in no particular order: Mick Dawn, Technical Manager; Ian Hattersley, Business Development Manager for Renewables and Mark Davies, Sales Office/Training Centre Manager – did I say three? – well as a bonus Emma Taylor, Health & Safety Manager/Marketing also joined us towards the end of our meeting.

SECTION SPONSOR

PROFESSIONAL EXPERTISE Nexans are experts in the world of cabling, cabling systems and power accessories which makes them extremely important to the supply chain. The purpose of our meeting was to concentrate on their expertise specifically relevant to the wind energy sector, onshore or offshore, which included news of their new Medium Voltage Training Centre, recently set up in Castleford.

COMPANY STRUCTURE AND SERVICES Nexans Power Accessories is a fully owned subsidiary of Nexans Network Solutions NV division Euromold, a world leader in the development and manufacture of screened separable connector systems and is responsible for all technical, sales and marketing relating to cabling accessories sold within the UK.

The company provides a complete range of accessories for underground cables such as silicone terminations, epoxy bushings for transformers and switchgear, as well as a large range of cold and heat shrinkable terminations and joints from 3.3 – 52 kV.

They have also developed a range of separable connections for voltages up to 72 kV for wind farms, both onshore and offshore which can also service the wave and tidal sector.

INNOVATIVE AND COST CONSCIOUS To add to their impressive suite of products Ian explained that they are constantly striving to achieve potential savings for both the onshore and offshore sectors. Following approaches by developers Nexans having designed an offshore junction cabinet.

OFFSHORE JUNCTION CABINET

Manufactured in the UK the cabinet is designed as a disconnecting point for internal tower cable and external subsea array cables, thus

providing an accessible and convenient point to assist creating power revenue sooner. Constructed in marine-grade stainless steel it is considerably robust within the harsh offshore conditions.

The first installation has proved to be enormously successful and as a result has increased sales year on year – proof of success if proof were needed.

TRAINING AND CERTIFICATION All these innovative designs and products are exceptional, however Mick explained that within the medium voltage industry there is no recognised approved standard of training and certification – i.e. from the Joint Industry Board (JIB) which sets the standards for employment, welfare and apprentice training in the electrical contracting industry.

Mick further explained “This is why it is imperative that the skills gap is filled and that Nexans as a company can ensure the integrity of their products and train competency in the installation of their products to clients.”

MEDIUM VOLTAGE TRAINING FACILITIES

Mark Davies, Training Centre Manager commented that the company’s 6,500 sq ft purpose built premises are able to offer a comprehensive suite of courses, for a maximum of 8 candidates “bespoke training courses are adapted to our customer needs – we don’t just sell a product, we sell a solution.” he added.

Training courses include…

• Product familiarisation for each technology

• Preparation of cables – basic foundation level

• Refresher courses for products • Medium voltage jointers training to install Nexans separable connectors for outer cone and push-on terminations – successful completion results in manufacturer certificate of competence

Following successful training each candidate receives a manufacturer certificate of competence and the company also offers client inspection services offshore.
