TRAINING IN ENDOSCOPIC INSPECTION

ZF Services UK is giving customers the capability to have greater control over maintenance decisions by hosting training courses in endoscopic inspection of wind turbine gearboxes at associate company ZF Wind Power Antwerpen in Belgium.

“They are looking for greater understanding of their assets and the ability to carry out inspections when they want to, instead of relying totally on a maintenance programme put in place and overseen by an external supplier.”

COURSE DETAIL

The courses are for up to eight people. Trainers demonstrate how to carry out an endoscopic inspection, via external access points and internal passageways, using the particular ZF gearboxes the energy company has in its turbines. They also instruct customers what to look for and how to correctly interpret the findings. “Being in the workshop with the actual unit also creates the opportunity to provide valuable additional insight into the development stages a gearbox has gone through, any upgrades and the reasons for those upgrades,” said David.

COST SAVINGS

“It also helps them save money. Most customers typically have a 12-monthly inspection regime, which is fine overall. But they could well identify a number of gearboxes that may need more regular observation.

“Having an inspection capability literally in their own hands means they can keep a really close eye on any potential problems and respond to them before any serious and costly issues occur.”

SPECIFIC TURBINE TRAINING The most popular courses were for ZF gearboxes in offshore turbines, such as the EH901 installed in the Vestas 3MW turbines, the 2MW EH802 and EH804, onshore and offshore turbines and the EH851, found in the Siemens SWT 2.3MW turbine.

The sessions, which run for between two and four days depending on the level of technical detail required, provide direct hands-on experience in the workshop without the need to ascend a turbine tower.

3 MAIN ADVANTAGES… 1 Popular with businesses who self- manage own major components

2 Hands-on opportunity without need to ascend turbine tower

3 Valuable insight into gearbox development stages

ZF Wind Power Antwerpen designs, manufactures and supplies wind turbine gearboxes and is a business unit of ZF Friedrichshafen, to which ZF Services UK also belongs.

GROWING DEMAND

David Morgan, Wind Turbine Business Manager for ZF Services UK, said demand for the training courses is growing. “It’s a definite trend, particularly for those who self-manage their own major components.”

David said a number of European owners have already attended the course and several UK operation and maintenance companies are also expressing an interest.
