QUALIFICATIONS Training & development investment pays off
Operating across the offshore wind market, working with remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) can offer an exciting career with global scope and the opportunity to work with some of the most advanced robotic technology. However attracting and retaining skilled personnel remains an on-going challenge for the sector.
This spurred independent subsea ROV provider ROVOP to focus on its own training and development initiatives. The Aberdeen- headquartered company owes much of its success to its sole objective to offer clients the best equipment, service and personnel, yet senior management recognised it may be difficult to sustain such rapid growth while ensuring personnel’s skill level and client service wasn’t diluted.
ROV TASKS
ROVs are frequently utilised by the offshore wind market instead of human subsea divers with tasks including pre-construction seabed surveys, cable laying and pull-ins, touchdown monitoring, foundation installation and other jobs related to the construction and maintenance of offshore wind facilities.
ROVOP ACADEMY
In 2012, ROVOP launched the ROVOP Academy to manage the continuous professional development of its ROV personnel, from trainees and new entrants to experienced, existing personnel. Created in consultation with industry bodies Subsea UK, the International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA) and recognised training provider MTCS, the ROVOP Academy includes more than 50 training modules, an in-house competency scheme, electronic logbook system and £250,000 ROV simulator which is an exact replica of one of
the company’s FMC Technologies Schilling Robotics Heavy Duty vehicles.
It offers employees clear career progression, no matter which level they join ROVOP, which is an important factor in increasing staff loyalty, retention and commitment.
PROGRESS & RESULTS
In three years since launching the ROVOP Academy, more than 110 ROV pilots have been recruited and last year, 549 man-days were spent training and 226 courses were attended. According to the company’s CEO, Steven Gray, the results speak for themselves.
