INDUSTRY LED PRACTICAL TRAINING

HETA are the Yorkshire and Humber region's leading Engineering Training Provider and since establishment in 1967 have developed industry led practical training programmes for apprentices and existing engineers. Since 2010, HETA have been active in the wind industry and are currently delivering programmes for Centrica, SSE, EON, Vestas and Ecotricity.

with high levels of input from the wind energy generation industry to closely mirror the way the sector works.

The qualification provides apprentices with all of the underpinning knowledge required of a highly multi-skilled technician, covering such diverse areas as the socio-political aspects of the industry as well as electrical and hydraulic science. The practical work in the first year of the programme covers all the basic skills and use of tools needed to be a useful member of a small team who will have to work in an isolated environment, capable of coping with whatever is thrown at them.

INDUSTRY LINKS Chris added: “In delivering the qualification, HETA takes existing skills from our instructors and combines them with our experience of working with and training wind turbine technicians. We have been working in this industry for several years and have trained both apprentices and adults in this field, delivering different qualifications.

“This has given us close links with the industry

PROVIDING LOCAL NEEDS James McIntosh, HETA’s Business Development and Marketing Manager, said: “We were the first in our area to take steps to match the local renewables companies’ needs and we are the only provider locally who can offer an approved City & Guilds Wind Turbine Technician apprenticeship course.

“The training is also relevant to adults – people generally who are working for wind turbine companies and are engineers. They might already have done an apprenticeship in a different industry at a time when this qualification wasn’t available. They might be qualified engineers who don’t have anything to say they are competent to work on wind turbines and we are in discussions with a number of the country’s leading operations and maintenance companies to train their employees.”

CONVERSION COURSES James continued: “The other area we are currently developing is a conversion course for existing engineers who are looking to get into the industry and become a Wind Turbine Service Technician. This course is delivered at our training centre and teaches the theory aspects of how a turbine works as well as some of the practical elements.”

FUTURE NEEDS

Chris Topple-Atkins, HETA’s Health, Safety and Environment Manager, said: “The offshore wind industry is taking shape now on the north and south banks of the Humber and the work we’ve done means we’re ready. We know that next year there will be more apprentices from more clients.”

PROGRAMME DETAIL

HETA’s programme is one of the EU Skills pathways from the Advanced Apprenticeship in the power industry framework. It is comprised primarily of two City & Guilds qualifications, both written

and has allowed us to provide unique opportunities for real life experience on onshore turbines as an integrated part of the training.”

SATISFIED CUSTOMER Ecotricity said: “We have recruited a number of apprentices through HETA and have been thoroughly impressed with the training and support provided within HETA’s apprenticeship programme. The wind turbine technician training programme allows Ecotricity to be confident in the competence of our engineers due to the level of both theory and practical training provided by HETA for this specialist industry.

“Having such facilities as HETA local to our service centre and a large proportion of our wind turbines, has allowed us to develop an excellent working relationship and confidence that our engineers will be trained to an exceptional standard.”
