TRAINING SPOTLIGHT

SCARBOROUGH CONSTRUCTION SKILLS VILLAGE

Located in the heart of the largest housing construction site in Yorkshire, the Construction Skills Village is an initiative that meets the current and future needs of the construction industry for the Borough.

over the next 5 years and over £40bn + of offshore construction off the Yorkshire Coast, the village gives local people the knowledge, skills and access routes into the construction industry. Importantly it gives employers a greater say in what is provided.

LIVE SITE ENVIRONMENT

The village is set up to replicate a 'live site' environment and can accommodate a whole range of learning disciplines from traditional house building trades to ground- works, civil engineering and even mine construction operations. The site also has scope to cater for offshore specific construction training activity.

ECONOMIC GROWTH PLANS Established to address the economic growth plans of the town which include over £2bn of proposed construction activity

SHOP WINDOW

The site acts as the ‘shop window’ for businesses looking for staff and broadens the horizons of apprentices, trainees and work experience placements learning and working on-site and being exposed to the wide range of construction sectors and disciplines.

EMPLOYER NEEDS

The Village can respond directly to employer needs. At the moment the focus is on the needs of house builders but programmes are being developed to address the wider needs of the construction industry with a focus on green skills and new methods of construction.

MOVING FORWARD

The first batch of 50 learners commenced in July 2015 and going forward there will be work with schools, both secondary and primary to promote the range of career opportunities within the sector.

LEAD PARTNERS

The CITB, Yorkshire Coast College, Redcar and Cleveland College and Leeds College of Building are lead partners and can offer the whole range of training opportunities from a day course to higher level degree equivalents.

The flexible arrangement is set up to accommodate new delivery partners as necessary, ensuring that the Construction Skills Village always puts employer needs first.
