HEALTH & SAFETY A CAREER AS A
As the wind energy sector grows and grows the need for technicians is ever growing: good news for those looking for a career as a wind turbine technician. Even better news is that with the leaps and bounds being made in safety, training is now a compulsory part of becoming a wind turbine technician.
Personnel climb the towers to the nacelle in order to carry out oil changes, fault find and repair equipment. Before engineers are able to climb the turbines they have to be certified and trained in height safety, climbing and rescue, a key point of working at height is being safe while working at height.
LEGAL REQUIREMENT
Training is a requirement of anyone working at height as outlined in the ‘Working at Height Regulations’ 2005. The Regulations apply to all work at height, where there is risk of a fall liable to cause personal injury and place duties on employers and those who control any work at height activity.
WIND TURBINE TECHNICIAN WHAT TRAINING WILL YOU NEED?
TURBINE CLIMBER TRAINING A typical ‘Turbine Climber’ training includes the elements of safe systems of work, equipment selection and inspection, risk assessment, wind turbine safety rules (WTSR) and emergency procedures, evacuation and rescue using appropriate wind turbine descent equipment.
With ‘Turbine Climber’ training a technician will be trained in… • Carrying out a risk assessment of work at height issues (includes requirements for rescue)
• Describing the main legislation that governs work at height
• Demonstrating the ability to select and use a range of personal protective equipment for working at height
• Correct fitting of harnesses • Describing and demonstrating the correct method of inspection, storing, care and maintenance of personal protective equipment
• Climbing and working at height using lanyards, harnesses and associated safety equipment
• General requirements for rescue • Suspension trauma & emergency procedures
• Rescue & evacuation from the motor room • Using and selecting the correct rescue equipment
• Evacuation techniques • Ladder rescue
ACCREDITATION
Preventing potential dangerous incidents and resulting injuries is what is required and Total Access (UK) Ltd are accredited by Renewables UK and The Global Wind Organisation (RUK/GWO) to train wind energy engineers to safely climb, rescue and evacuate from height.
The company’s courses train engineers in the use of climbing and evacuation equipment which allows users to quickly evacuate towers and also rescue other wind engineers from height.
