INVESTMENT IN INNOVATION AND R&D

Continual investment in R&D is going to be essential if the UK is to retain its position as the industry leader in offshore wind energy.

Design, production, manufacturing and maintenance were highlighted in a recent report ‘UK Offshore Wind: Opportunities for trade and investment’ as key areas for investment, however, the area within the value chain which arguably presents the biggest opportunity for growth is technology – something which is championed by Andy Poon, CEO of Romax Technology who commented…

“The offshore wind energy market is very much in the spotlight following government support. It is therefore vital that any investment must build on the knowledge and data gained from existing wind farm estates. To achieve this, continual investment in R&D and technology will be required to make the most of this support and to ensure the industry remains sustainable and profitable.”

For Romax Technology, investment in innovation and R&D has been at the forefront of the business for over 26 years. In doing so, it has established itself as an independent global leader in the application of design solutions for bearings and gearboxes for the wind energy sector.

HISTORY

The company started out as a single idea from its President and Founder, Dr Peter Poon MBE, a recognised world-leading expert in rolling bearings. Now in the hands of his son Andy, Romax has grown into an organisation of 250 people in 12 offices across the globe. Last year it moved into a new £5.6m flagship head office, located on the University of Nottingham’s Innovation Park.

STRATEGY

Investment in R&D is central to Romax’ strategy. Andy comments: “At Romax we take R&D very seriously. As an engineering company first and foremost, we are constantly looking at the way things work, how to improve them and enable better processes and more cost effective solutions. Our aim is always to assist in getting things to work more reliably and get them to market faster, while helping to lower the cost of energy.”

PERSONNEL

The company employs highly skilled engineers with over three quarters of staff educated to degree level and 30 per cent to PhD level. The company prides itself on its technological awareness and the high quality of its staff to bring about that innovation.

SUPPORT

The company also supports wind asset owners and operators right across the globe with a presence across Europe, the USA, Korea, India and China. Its products and services are designed to maximise sustainable energy yields that optimise the balance between turbine and component performance and operational costs.

DESIGN SOFTWARE

RomaxDESIGNER software is used widely in the design of some of the world's largest wind turbines and is acknowledged as the industry standard for this rapidly expanding global market sector. RomaxDESIGNER offers seamless integration with all major CAD applications, Multibody Dynamic Analysis (MBD) and gear design applications.
