Viessmann Targets Energy Efficiency in Reflow Soldering Continued from previous page

three potential partners, running further tests with each of them. Test production began with one of the most complex serial boards from the compa- ny’s range of products. At the end of the extensive process, criteria such as supplier/manufacturer assessment, technology, energy efficiency, cost, and quality were analyzed. In the end, Rehm was the clear winner. The company found that its V8 systems were

hitting cycle time limits. With the VisionXP+, cycle times under 25 seconds are possible —a reduction of 20 percent overall. Along with saving time, power, nitrogen use and emissions were all reduced by 20 percent. Due to the development of a new type of pyrol-

ysis technology for cleaning the residue in the reflow systems, the maintenance costs for the processing chamber can be cut in half. Rehm also guarantees VisionXP+ replacement parts for 10 years. This means that replacement parts for repairs and maintenance are available from the manufacturer to cover the entire scope of intended use. The system is also flexible enough to be efficient during product changeovers. Compared with the V8, which

had a length of 5.6m (18.4 ft), the new systems measure 6.7m (22 ft) in length, and come with upgraded technology, a longer cooling section and the new pyrolysis technology. The development of the convec-

days between dismantling an old machine and starting up the new one. This tight schedule kept production from being disturbed.

Page 67 “It was an enormous challenge to prepare the

locations for the machines with all the supply lines and connections, and then to integrate the machines into the SMT lines so that everything fit in — without interrupting production,” says Michael Hanke, Rehm’s chief customer officer. “But, we did it.” The Viessman Group aims to con- tinually improve its energy efficiency during man- ufacturing. The new VisionXP+ systems from Rehm are allowing it to do so. Contact: Rehm Thermal Systems, LLC, 3080

tion soldering system was a complex process and was supported by the German Environmental Foundation. In the Rehm Technology Center in Blaubeuren, intensive testing and measuring were carried out. Now, the system’s vacuum chambers and pyrolysis technology have been fine- tuned, delivering excellent results for Viessmann.

Uninterrupted Production The entire changeover at Allen -

dorf has been completed. The individ- ual lines were replaced on an annual cycle, with the fourth and final sys- tem now set up, tested and handed over. During significant phases of the project, a team of experts from Rehm were onsite to monitor and support each step. There were often only two
