Page 101 PI Develops High-Res Nanopositioning Controller

Auburn, MA — PI has released a new refer- ence-class digital controller/driver, which offers higher bandwidth and resolution, along with three times the power, over its predecessor. The E-754 is designed for closed-loop

piezo mechanisms with capacitive position feedback sensors and has an ultra-fast servo with an update rate of 50 kHz and 22-bit res- olution. In addition to PID control, two pro- grammable notch filters are integrated for higher bandwidth suppression of mechanical system resonances. Its digital linearization is based on fourth degree polynomials, sup- pressing linearity to less than 0.01 percent. The dynamical digital linearization

(DDL) firmware option eliminates phase lag and dynamic non-linearities at high operating frequencies, such as those found in scanning applications. The drive provides 500mA peak current and –30 to 135V output voltage swing.

German RepRap Develops Industrial 3D Printer

Coral Gables, FL — German RepRap has developed an industrial 3D printer, the X1000, which is capable of printing parts up to 1m (3.3 ft) in size. The printer is designed for cus- tomers to build large parts for proto- type and functional applications with a wide variety of engineering-grade materials.

Features of the system include:

a large build envelope of 1,000 x 800 x 600 mm (39.4 x 32 x 23.6 in.), high process reliability, safety features for industrial use, special ventilation for

E-754 one-axis digital piezo controller. In addition to Ethernet (TCP/IP), the con-

troller is equipped with SPI, USB, RS-232, four I/O trigger lines, and a high-res 20-bit DAC analog command interface. A built-in high-speed data recorder allows the capture of transients and the optimization of servo parameters. The controller contains an auto-calibration

ID chip for quick start up and for the interchange- ability of controller and piezo mechanisms without recalibration, a critical feature for OEMs. The con- troller also comes with extensive software support for LabVIEW and shared libraries for both

Windows and Linux. Contact: PI (Physik Instrumente) L.P., 16

high-quality prints, network compat- ibility (Wi-Fi and Ethernet), and a draft-mode. The system comes with an inte-

grated software suite that allows the user to customize settings and pro- vides support for dual-extruders, multipart printing and for multiple processes in one part. The company has developed an

entire family of 3D printers that allow engineers to print parts from their Solidworks CAD models, with high dimensional accuracy and relia- bility, while also eliminating the headaches of working with time-con- suming and expensive service bureaus.
