from Siltronic and the Polysilicon di- vision. First quarter sales forecasts of about €1.4 billion (USD $1.5 bil- lion) for the Wacker group have al- ready been exceeded. Dr. Rudolf Staudigl, president and CEO of Wacker, cautions that increasing costs of raw materials, including eth- ylene and coal, along with trade bar- riers, could cause damage to global supply chains. According to Staudigl, the solar
industry continues to show a strong growth trend, despite the overcapaci- ty in photovoltaics. While global mar- ket prices for solar modules continue to decline, photovoltaics are compet- ing with other energy sources and ex- panding the market. Wacker’s recently-opened poly-
silicon site in Charleston, Tennessee, is perfectly positioned to take advan- tage of this growth in the solar mar- ket and has successfully ramped up its nominal capacity of 20,000 metric tons or more per year. Polysilicon, the basic building block of semicon- ductors, is sure to benefit from the growth in the market for new sensors to support the ever-increasingly con- nected world. The success of the Charleston
plant has prompted an additional $150 million investment to construct a pyrogenic-silica plant and take the first step toward establishing a fully- integrated production site. The ex- pansion is scheduled to be completed in 2019. The company is also building a

connectivity. With 60 years of experi- ence in the automotive industry, Wacker is well-prepared to handle the transition to electric vehicles. The company’s silicone products
are already being used for sensors and engine control units, with typical applications including chip bonding, potting compounds, thermally con- ductive adhesives, and sealants. Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles
generally run between 400 and 800V, use 15 to 150 kW motor/generator sets, and increasingly use IGBT mod- ules in power conversion units. Sili- cones are used for power module pot- ting, thermal interface materials (TIMs), conformal coatings, and gap fillers. Hybrid and all-electric vehicle batteries require thermal manage- ment, which is crucial for safety, per- formance and operating life. Sili- cones help to dissipate heat from the cell to the module, and from the mod- ule to the case. Silicone adhesives are used to mount discrete components to heatsinks on PCBs. Automotive display panels are
growing in size and in number. Fu- ture vehicles will be equipped with multiple displays for infotainment, instrument clusters, rear-seat enter- tainment, and smart mirrors. Wack- er has developed optically clear resins for automotive displays to meet durability, temperature resist- ance, enhanced readability, reduced reflection, and contour demands. The company’s factory in
Burghausen, Germany, is also devel- oping a range of innovative products. These include: touch films with em- bedded sensors; medical applications for permeable wound care, which are easy to remove and minimize scar- ring, along with dermal drug deliv- ery systems and implantables; “su- per-adhesives” and insulating prod- ucts for construction; 3D printing/sil- icone gel systems for medical device and automotive applications; and an- ti-graffiti surface coatings.
