“It’s quite easy to achieve near field flat frequency response and appropriate SPLs, but to ensure that reflections were controlled and all speakers were located and time aligned correctly within the space was a challenge.”

amount of ‘air’ when dance music is played at the club. “Traditionally I’ve rarely seen VHF systems correctly implemented, I’ve never been comfortable with them used as overhead dancefloor clusters, dislocated from their high frequency partners. The time alignment on average can’t be correct for the majority of patrons that’s why we have arrayed them above each dance system,” commented Anthony. “They don’t draw attention to themselves and they follow correct design practice.” The Boom Box is the second smaller room at Marquee The Star and caters for other genres of music. It features a flown four-corner stack system with centralised bass. The Boom Box system includes 16 Martin Audio W8LM line array elements, three Martin Audio WS218X subwoofers and a further 12 VHF tweeter arrays. Three bar areas are catered for by 76 Martin Audio OmniLine micro line array cabinets, and nine Martin Audio AQ212 subwoofers. After visiting the Boom Box, clubbers are met by the VIP area, which mirrors the experience of the main dancefloor using a giant LED screen. The Main Room acts are relayed via a video link. In order to recreate the atmosphere from the main area, an equally impressive audio set-up was required. The VIP area is home to 20 Martin Audio OmniLine micro line array elements in four clusters and two Martin Audio S15+ sub basses. The Library sits beside the VIP area, and has been equipped with four high-end ATC SCM 7 bookshelf loudspeakers and three concealed Martin Audio AQ112 subwoofers. The audio install even continues into the restrooms. The main unisex bathroom is more like a club within itself as it is equipped with separate DJ playback facilities. A ceiling mounted speaker system incorporating 37 Martin Audio C6.8Ts was selected as the best option for this area of the club. To complete the speaker set-up, DJ monitoring is taken care of by two Martin Audio AQ215 subs, two Martin Audio Blackline F12+ cabinets and three Martin Audio LE 2100 bi-amp wedge monitors; two in the Main Room and one in the Boom Box. Marquee The Star required a total of 40 amplifiers - a combination of QSC Audio’s PL Series platform with a compliment of 325, 340

and 380’s with the balance made up of QSC’s CX Series platform comprising multichannel 254, 404 and 108’s - occupying more than 120 units of rack space. QSC provided the logical choice to the installation where reliability, sound quality and DSP integration were the most important aspect for the venue. To complement the QSC amplifiers and to ensure all control requirements were met, a QSC networking solution was also specified. Because the audio system at Marquee The Star has more than 80 output channels, required a simplified user interface and had to handle complicated DSP, a QSC Q-Sys Core 1000 was chosen for audio routing, processing and to handle all of the control functions. Anthony said: “I have worked with the Q-Sys system on many other important installations and it has handled all these tasks with ease in every respect, so the decision to install the Q-Sys was a no brainer.” He continued: “The integration of QSC as a single DSP and amplifier supplier ensured successful complex routing and signal processing. Fault reporting and load monitoring can be sent to technicians via email or SMS should a error be detected. Offsite personnel are able to log in to listen and analyse through their speakers at home to any part of the signal chain right down to the amplifier outputs, something which is truly cutting edge.” Anthony summed up the audio install: “Marquee The Star has installed by far the most advanced, cutting edge sound system in the world... full stop. We are delighted to have been the company responsible for specifying and being part of the team. The most exciting aspect is reading countless reviews and seeing comments relating to the sound system such as ‘jaw dropping’, ‘amazing’, ‘killer system’ and ‘best ever sound’; the list of superlatives is never- ending.” Manhattan based ICrave Design formed part of the design team that was responsible for creating a fluid interior, leading the crowds from the entrance into the Main Room and then the other areas of the club, all the time maximising the spectacular views of Sydney Harbour. A series of tiered platforms, raised performance podiums and the barrisol ceiling were all used to create illusions of height
