100 EXPO

people fundamentally don’t like change so didn’t turn up, is debatable. However, I did notice in the official IIR post show release visitor figures aren’t quoted which one can only draw the conclusion they were actually down on the previous year?. With both the location and visitor numbers came a lot of grumbling from exhibi- tors, both Western and Chinese about the show, to be honest I think as said above there is a dislike of change and ultimately as long as the show can stick it out this sentiment will die down, but if they can’t rectify the visitor issue then there could be trouble ahead. Palm Beijing has a number of exhibitions vying for its crown and I think there is a head of steam developing in particular in Guangzhou, home to most of the Chinese manufacturers. With this in mind there was an unsubstantiated rumour circulating that the organisers of Palm Beijing were looking at launching an event in Guangzhou, or alternating Palm from Beijing to Guangzhou. Whether these rumours are true I would have to question the logic, the most obvious misgivings

would be about adding a show to the already overcrowded global exhibition calendar. Whilst looking at alternating the event between Beijing and Guangzhou and basically disrupting what is an established and successful event can only cause confusion in the market, especially as there are already two shows specifically in Guangzhou for the entertainment technology sector.

All this is speculation, but personally I think Palm Beijing should stick to its roots, it is one of the few shows globally that has maintained it growth and importance over the past few troublesome years, albeit due to it being in China - one of the fastest growing economies in the world - and as it is in Beijing which is the political and cultural centre of China, still where most governmental purchasing decisions are made.

Palm Expo Beijing will return to the CIEC on 7-10 June 2013. For more information go to: www.palmexpo.com
