COSTA FASCINOSA

Company: Powersoft Location: Mediterranean Sea

The 114,500-ton, 3,780 passenger Costa Fascinosa cruise ship was designed by well-known architect, Joe Farcus. It is distinguished by the design of a key concept, ‘things that fascinate’. The concept was inspired by movies such as Gone with the Wind, Fellini’s Amarcord and Slumdog Millionaire. One of the unforgettable experiences on this impressive floating city is the out- standing audio system that has provided a number of solutions to cater for different areas and facilities. Restaurants and bars, the chapel, library, casino, pool, fitness centre and spa, dance lounge and disco and meeting rooms are the spaces in which Powersoft’s M Series, Duecanali and Ottocanali amplifiers have been installed. Flexibility and versatility are the key words that identify the audio system designed for Costa Fas- cinosa. The Powersoft models that were selected include the M14D, two channels driving 700W on four ohms, the M50Q DSP+ETH, four channels each generating four times 1,250W on four ohms, as well as the Duecanali 3904 and the Ottoca- nali 1204 - eight channels driving 150W on four ohms or 125W on 70V thanks to BatFormers, the optional plug in output transformers. One of the core entertainment venues on the ship is the elegant Bel Ami theatre, which is entirely decorated in hues of purple and silver, with sparkling antique mir- rors. The theatre offers a sumptuous and engaging spectacle with a lighting design

and sound system that are worthy of Broadway. “In order to achieve an excellent result we designed a system with flexible ampli- fiers that can seamlessly drive 100V or low-impedance lines,” stated Andrea Macchia, Technical Sales Engineer at H.M.S., the company that supplied the Powersoft amplifiers. Performing in the main theatre and powering a set of 143 EAW speakers, are two rack cabinets equipped with 26 Powersoft amplifiers, fitted with optional DSP cards with Ethernet connectivity and system monitoring and control via Armonía Pro Audio Suite software. Powersoft amplifiers represent the ideal solution due to the strict requirements in terms of safety, power consumption and the huge complexity in the distribution of spaces that a cruise ship presents. Their thermal loss is around 50% in comparison to other amplifiers available on the market in the same category. “This means a lower energy consumption and a subsequent decrease in air-conditioning power consumption,” continued Andrea Macchia “Take into account that Powersoft amplifiers allow to dislocate the audio racks in smaller lockers and saving space is paramount on a ship.”
