To say this issue has been hectic would be an understatement, though to take on a challenge and see it through is somewhat gratifying. I’m hoping by the next time I write this leader page I’ll have someone new to introduce on the editorial side and with a bit of luck you’ll get to meet him or her at PLASA. Speaking of challenges, show organiser IIR was faced with one this year after moving its Palm Expo Beijing exhibition to a new venue. The move was met by grumbles from many exhibitors. In stark contract Palm Expo Mumbai, which took place the following week, has come on leaps and bounds since its last show, with signs of the market maturing in its own unique way. Next was KOBA in Seoul, it too received positive feedback. You’ll find a more in depth review of these shows in our In Business section.
Arguably some of the biggest news to emerge from the tradeshow circuit in recent weeks though, is the Music Group’s acquisition of UK-based audio manufacturer, Turbosound. The announcement was made at Infocomm in Las Vegas. What this means for Turbsound exactly is anyone’s guess. Mergers, acquisitions and equity investments have become somewhat frequent and to a point expected in recent years - particularly with the economic uncertainty in some parts of the world - so did this really come as a shock to the industry? After all this is Music Group owner, Uli Behringer’s second acquisition of a UK company in three years. He took on Midas and Klark Teknik in 2009. The two brands still operate mainly from the UK, although some operations have been moved to China. Let’s hope a similar balance is struck for the loudspeaker manufacturer. It’s important to keep British manufacturing alive. The trouble with take-overs, particularly by large companies, is the fear of a company being stripped of its identity and losing its roots.

Music Group’s next move is unknown but there’s no doubt we’ll be waiting in anticipation to find out. When it comes to power houses like that you just can’t help but wonder...
