Finland looks exactly as you’d imagine a wilderness covered Nordic country to look; where stunning rugged green views meet with an impressive near 188,000 rippling lake making up a picturesque forest amid wooden homes and infrequent passers by. Founded in 1978 by Ilpo Martikainen, Genelec is based in Iisalmi, and is a manufacturer of active loud- speaker systems created especially for professional studio recording, mixing and mastering applications as well as the broadcast and film production world. In 2002, Genelec introduced a range of home cinema loudspeakers, but for mondo*dr, it was the growth of Genelec’s involvement in the install market, which prompted a visit to the company’s factory in June. Genelec’s Lars-Olof Janflod, who was recently pro- moted to Marketing and Public Relations Director ex- plained: “Genelec has a long history. Installations and sound contracting were actually part of the company’s activity in the early days up until late ‘80s, at which point the company decided to be a manufacturer of monitoring products only. What happened after that was that monitoring products started to find their way into installs by customers who wanted to have the best possible sound reproduction in their environment, be it a pub, bar, restaurant or in a corporate boardroom.” The Finnish HQ - which has over 100 employees -

may be logistically way ‘up North’, but being based in Finland hasn’t stopped Genelec infiltrating the rest of the world with its active speaker technology. To date, Genelec products are distributed to over 70 countries around the globe and inland may not be the most economic country in which to manufacture loudspeak- ers, but Genelec takes pride in its sustainability in its home country.
Lars commented: “It’s not been particularly difficult as such, because many of our distributors in pro audio are already serving the install industry and thus we have the sales channel available to us.” As a leading brand in professional monitoring, Genelec’s speakers are known to solely use active core technology, which is gaining momentum with installation decision makers as the long-term benefits are being noted. The already popular 8000 Series welcomed a new addition to the installation market in 2010 with the 4000 Series, which was debuted at the ISE tradeshow. The 4000 Series products are compact, powerful, high performance, two-way active loudspeakers designed for indoor commercial and professional installations. The series also includes an integrated amplifier with in-built protection circuitry to guarantee reliability. The 4040A model is designed for demanding speech amplification projects in the
professional installation market and now includes a unique AutoStart function that is compliant with the new ErP (energy related-products) Directive. Lars continued: “The 4000 Series has grown out of the fact that many clients already used our 8000 Series in installations and we wanted to make it a more install-friendly product and also a better suited product. So we have changed the XLR connector for the line level input to industry accepted and much used screw terminal bar making it easier to connect. Then we have added a wall mount with every speaker and in one case, the biggest in the 4000 series, the 4040A we have also limited the bandwidth in favour of SPL.”
More recently, a Genelec monitor install was com- pleted in Michelin-star Chinese restaurant Hakkasan, in Mumbai. Pandam Professional Audio oversaw the installation. A total of eight 8050A bi-amplified moni- tors were selected for the main dining room along with a 7073A subwoofer and a Sonifex distribution ampli- fier, whilst a smaller 15-seater private dining area was equipped with two wall-mounted 8030 enclosures. Lars concluded: “We’ve seen new and additional orders for these products from many different corners of the world and we hope to see it grow further.”
