Reflection A light shines on us this day, the Lord is born for us and we are called “the-sought-
after”, the “city-not-forsaken”. Rejoice!
For many the wondrous mystery of the Incarnation has become an abstract concept. How can we come to some faint understanding of this mystery that God has become one of us and for us. To do this, writes Rahner, we must listen to “the experience of our hearts”.
Literature can sometimes help us here for it may capture mystery in new and surprising ways. HFM Prescott’s novel, The Man on a Donkey, does that for me. Set in the England of Henry VIII it tells the story of Malle, a young servant girl and Wat, a lad who has no power of speech. As we read let us, like Mary, listen and treasure the experience of our hearts.
