Reflection

“It is great wisdom to know how to be silent and to look at neither the remarks, nor the deeds, nor the lives of others.” –Saint John of the Cross

In Psalm 34, we pray “I will bless the Lord at all times; praise shall be always in my mouth” yet how frequently are the words from our mouths intended to praise God and uplift others? What words do we let into our lives and days through music, television and our own conversations? Lately, I am convinced that we are called to surround ourselves with people that bring us joy and to help nurture the God within in the context of both silence and life- giving conversations. In both the Psalm and the reading from Zephaniah, a connection is made between purifying the words on

our lips and radiating joy. When we come to places where we do not find joy, we are to be joy for that place, conversation or moment. In the words of St. John the Cross, "Where there is no love, put love – and you will find love."
