Advent is about waiting; the season invites an orientation of heart and mind that longs for what is not yet. Today’s readings are forward-looking:
The days are coming, says the Lord . . .
Justice shall flourish in his time . . .
She will bear a son …
While we hear these promises for the future, Matthew's gospel reminds us of the promise given in the present, evident in the name of Jesus: Emmanuel, “God with us.”
How is God with us? Emmanuel invites us to love him by entering our humanity and history as a child, one who relies completely on the care of others.
