about our ancestors can teach us much about who we are, who we resemble, and maybe even who we might want to become. If one researches some of the people listed, one would find quite a mixture of humanity—leaders, kings, adulterers, prostitutes, murderers, and tradesmen with inherent qualities such as faithfulness/deceitfulness, wisdom/foolishness, and love/hatred, to name a few.

It’s in this lineage of holiness/sinfulness that the loving, providential care of God is woven and surprises us by speaking a Word, a name, Emmanuel, who becomes one with us in all ways but sin. How blessed are we to have now Jesus as a member of our genealogy! How blessed are we in the way that Jesus comes - as a child - helpless and needy! And we discover that it is precisely in our helplessness and in our needs that our Savior always comes to us bearing a blessing of hope. All we have to do is ask or sometimes just show up. Oh, the depth and the wisdom and knowledge of God! When was the last time you invited God in and listened? What blessing did you hear?

Prayer

O Wisdom, as we enter this octave before Christmas and find ourselves quite hectic with all of the Christmas preparations, we ask you to make us ready. Help us gain wisdom of heart to recognize and welcome you into every aspect and circumstance of our lives. May you always remind us to pay attention to who we are in your eyes, to embrace that knowledge, and to be a blessing for others.
