Reflection


God cares. Everything about these readings points to God’s boundless love for us in every circumstance of our lives. Isaiah reminds us that we are not forsaken, but that we are God’s delight. How comforting this is during a time of economic hardship that may be compounded by our own personal sufferings. Better times may seem to come at a snail’s pace but the psalmist assures us that God’s compassion never fails and God’s promises stand firm. We remember with St. Paul how God saved Israel time and again and how God continues to save through Jesus Christ. Slowly but surely, in ways sometimes hidden, God is bringing us and all of creation to fullness of life. Matthew shows us how even the


less than savory parts of our lives can be opportunities for grace. His genealogy of Jesus mentions illustrious ancestors like Abraham, David and Solomon. But he also includes Rahab, a prostitute; Ruth, a foreigner; Bathsheba, the wife of Uriah who was taken by David in adultery. He follows with the unconventional
